USD President Mary Lyons said the changemaker-campus label is a public symbol of what the university has long pursued. “What’s exciting about changemaking is whether you go into government, the nonprofit or for-profit sector, or launch your own endeavor, you can bring your values to the workplace and feel you have an impact.” “We find that students are really looking more and more to make a difference in this lifetime, and many of them see those as skills that they can employ in their career path,” she added. Universities that are changemakers will likely attract students interested in making a difference in the world, Kim said. Officials on the campus said the annual Ashoka U Exchange event will provide a chance for changemaker universities to talk about what works best in social entrepreneurship education.Īshoka wants to boost the number of changemaker campuses to 30 by 2015. This week, USD will host a three-day conference titled “Unlock the U in University,” which will bring 650 students, college leaders and social entrepreneurs from 150 institutions to San Diego. Nineteen public and private universities have been named changemakers, including Arizona State, Portland State, Brigham Young and Marquette. Social entrepreneurs have done things such as launch organizations that recruit and train teachers for low-income schools, encourage publishers to use alternatives to traditional paper in books and magazines, and help establish affordable private schools for the poor.
The private Catholic university was recognized in 2011 by the nonprofit group Ashoka as a “changemaker campus.” It’s a designation given to institutions committed to creating social entrepreneurs - people who act as agents of change to solve social problems on a large scale.
Since it was founded more than six decades ago, the University of San Diego has sought to prepare future leaders who embrace the mission of making a difference in the world.
